J.MILFORD ELLISON-A
painter, graphic artist, and teacher, J Milford Ellison was highly
active in southern California in the last half of the 20th century. He
was Director of Art exhibitions for the Southern California Expo at Del
Mar from 1970 to 1973. He taught at San Diego City School, and from 1946
to 1969 was Chairman of the Art Department at Point Loma High School in
San Diego. He also taught art classes with the extension division of the
University of California and from 1954 to 1961, was an instructor in
watercolor at the University of California Western Campus. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Chouinard Art School, San Diego State College, University of Colorado, University of Southern California, and Mexico City College. He worked as a commercial artist in Chicago, and moved to California in 1928, settling in San Diego. He first worked as a freelance artist before taking the teaching positions. Ellison was a long time member of the Carmel Art Association, San Diego Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and the La Jolla Art Association. In 1964, as a founding member, he served as the 1st President of the San Diego Watercolor Society. He served as President of the La Jolla Art Association in 1971-72. (Source: AskArt.com) |

Irving Amen (born 1918 in New York City) is known as a master printmaker He has produced thousands of woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and silk-screen prints. He also creates using oil and acrylic as well as some sculpture. Irving Amen had a studio in New York City for many years but moved to Boca Raton, Florida in the 1990s, where he is still producing his art. He is represented in many major art galleries and museums of the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in Washington, DC. Many of Amen's works have been created around Judaic themes. One masterpiece is his set of twelve windows at Congregation Agudas Achim in Columbus, Ohio depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Other favorite Amen works depicts women, children, music themes, chess, international landmarks, and literary characters such as Don Quixote. Amen also taught classes in sculpture and printmaking at such schools as the Pratt Institute (1961) and at University of Notre Dame (1962). In 1974, Amen illustrated the classic mythological tale Gilgamesh for the Limited Editions Book Club with nine 3-color woodcuts and 7 part-page black and white woodcuts and linocuts. | EDGAR (ED) STARR was a prominent background artist and producer for Walt Disney Studios in the 1940's, along with his best friend Bud Rickert. He worked on Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, South of the South- name just a few. After WWII, he moved to Mexico and "commuted" to the United States to continue his work as a short film animator and producer, creating many 1950's classics such as "Father's Day Off", "What Makes Us Tick" and "Working Dollars." In collaboration with other animators and producers, he worked on animated films for major American corporations to promote their images at home and abroad.
